The WIG Page Datasheet no. 18

The SM-5 was the first WIG vehicle that was actually a small scale KM prototype, the scale was about 1/4. Some of the exhaust of the engine is tapped of for the two nose mounted PAR nozzles. A spray wall is used to protect the internal engine against spray ingestion. The SM-5 flew in 1963 and it crashed in 1964. The accident was due to a strong head wind that made the SM-5 climb and lose stability. The pilot was an aircraft pilot and he reacted by giving the engines full power, this made the loss of stability worse and it crashed. The accident could have been avoided if the pilot had reduced power instead of the increase. Unfortunately the pilot died in this accident.
