The WIG Page Datasheet no. 19

The SM-6 is a small predecessor of the Orlyonok, mainly designed as a testbed for the engine configuration of the Orlyonok. Some sources claim that the SM-6 was a scaled down Orlyonok, i.e. that it was built after the Orlyonok, but that is not true.
The SM-6 is fitted with one AI-20K turboprop cruise engine and two RD-9A turbofans (or turbojets?) for PAR power and accelleration. The only SM-6 that was built made its first flight in 1972, it was tested over water, ice and land. Some photos show a fuselage code 6M79 and others 6M80, these numbers indicate test phases, not production numbers. In the eighties the SM-6 was used as a trainer. The SM-6 is capable of carrying 20 passengers.
The SM-6 is also called Utka by some sources, which is not correct. The SM-6 is preserved and used a a "Gate Guard" at Kaspiisk naval base.
